Nero is an affectionate 2 year old male who suffers from anxiety when meeting new people. This anxiety does not result in destructive behaviors like tearing things up or accidents in the house.
If he’s walking on a leash outside or in a store he is totally fine seeing new people and other dogs. But if a person he doesn’t know tries to interact with him he barks and growls. It can be quite intimidating so we recommend that he wears a vest in public that alerts people not to approach him.
He doesn't like to meet company and prefers seclusion when company is over. It's recommended to give him his own spot where he can feel safe and comfortable.
He’s not a highly driven German Shepherd. He’s fine spending time home alone and although he loves a good run, he’s on the lower end of exercise requirements for this breed.
He’d be a great companion for someone who doesn’t mind a dog that doesn’t want to meet new people. He’s loving and eager to please, and quite honestly a big teddy bear once he feels safe with you. He loves car rides and would do well as a sidekick for a delivery driver.
The toughest part of his transition would be the introduction process to get him to feel safe with his new owner. This would require a couple meetings. After that would be pretty clear sailing as he’s had extensive obedience training and has very good house manners.
He gets along well with other dogs and actually benefits from having a confident female around as he follows her lead. We haven’t had him around cats but he doesn’t exhibit much of a prey drive so I believe he’d do well.
NOTE: In lieu of our normal rate, we're asking that his new owner make a donation of their choice to Herzog's Heroes that will go directly toward our breeder training program to help breeders prepare for the event that one of their dogs is returned. This program will help prevent countless dogs from being relinquished to shelters.
ABOUT NERO:
- He’s 2 years old, intelligent and sweet.
- He has a strong desire to attach himself to one person in a household.
- He requires owners who are confident to help show him he doesn’t need to be fearful.
- It is not recommended for him to live with children as they usually can’t exhibit the leadership Nero needs.
- Once he adjusts to his surroundings and bonds with his new owners, he’s a teddy bear. Very loving and affectionate to those people.
